Relatively low cost and rugged, thermocouples have vast range of applications and are used anywhere a temperature measurement is required.  Drawbacks are the low signal output and the accuracy and long term stability compared with technologies such as the RTD.

When combined with modern electronics thermocouples offer a relatively cheap way of accurately measuring temperature. They are small, robust (especially if fitted in a protective housing), easy to manufacture, respond quickly and cover a wide temperature range.
